What breaks

Windows Server 2016 reaches end of updates. After that, the standard lifecycle no longer provides security updates, non-security updates, or assisted support for the release.

Who is affected

  • Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, Essentials, MultiPoint Premium, and Standard
  • The same January 12, 2027 fixed-policy list also names Hyper-V Server 2016, Windows Storage Server 2016, Windows Defender for Windows Server 2016, WSUS for Windows Server 2016, and IIS 10 on Windows Server 2016

Source notes

The release-health page, current as of October 13, 2026, says: on January 12, 2027, Windows Server 2016 will reach end of updates. It points to Windows Server 2025 as the latest LTSC release.

The Ending Support in 2027 list puts Windows Server 2016, and the related 2016 server products named above, at end of support on January 12, 2027. After end of support, that page says there are no new security updates, non-security updates, free or paid assisted support, or online technical content updates.

The product lifecycle page lists the extended end as January 13, 2027, 6:59:59 AM Pacific, for Datacenter, Essentials, MultiPoint Premium, and Standard. Read that timestamp next to the January 12 end-of-updates sentence rather than as a second product.

Release health and the 2027 end-of-support list both use January 12, 2027. The product lifecycle page records the extended end as January 13, 2027 at 6:59:59 AM Pacific. This card uses January 12 because that is the end-of-updates day Microsoft tells admins to plan for. It is not recorded here as a moved date.
